PRIVATE LESSONS

Coming from a family of educators, I’ve always loved music first and foremost as an avenue for discovery and connection, and I strive to foster that joy in my students. I’ve been teaching private lessons for drums since high school, and as I’ve built my career I’ve expanded to include piano and songwriting lessons, pulling from 20 years of live music industry experience and a lifelong study of craft and musicianship.

My lessons are tailored to your personal goals, whether you’re a career musician or interested in picking up a new hobby, and I work with each student to flesh out a repertoire of songs you genuinely enjoy, teaching fresh concepts in context with every new song we tackle. My own musical upbringing was heavily influenced by the session musician scene in Asheville, and I place a strong emphasis on comfort, control, and intention, so you can make confident musical choices in every style and setting and build your own voice as an instrumentalist or composer. I also spend a lot of time on the “why” behind each concept, so your practice never feels disconnected from your goals.

My two older kids were novice/intermediary musicians and they wanted to learn about music production - to take things to the next level. [Ian] was patient and kind and truly inspirational. He met each of us where we were at and managed our group with the finesse and kind understanding of a guru while pulling out our very best. He’s not a teacher, he’s a jedi!

Ian is a wonderful teacher, he tailored our lessons to my interests at the same time as pushing my skills further than I thought they could go. He’s also a super cool and kind human being!

Ian is an AMAZING teacher. I’m confident recommending him for all kinds of students. For nontraditional learners who typically find formal instruction challenging or too stifling, Ian is definitely your guy! Intuitive and perceptive, he can meet you exactly where you are at with precisely the tools and techniques required. He’s ready for anything!

[He] taught me college level stuff which is crazy i’m only 12!

I started taking drum set lessons from Ian after decades of focusing on other instruments and based on the recommendation of my son, a professional musician and drummer. I was hoping that Ian could help me improve my drumming fundamentals and also explore techniques that seemed too challenging for me to tackle on my own. I have been incredibly happy with the both the process and results of working with Ian over the period of a couple of years. My lessons with Ian have had a good balance of being directed by my personal goals, while also incorporating Ian’s input and seemingly boundless expertise on the fundamentals of drumming and how it overlaps with the genres of rock, jazz, latin, and other musical styles and genres.

I think that [he] explained a lot of stuff really well, especially when it came to super complicated parts. Plus [he’s] super funny and easy to talk to.
